Pass-Through washing system for large containers in the fish industry

For the company BIOCEVAL, with its 25-year experience in the production of fish meal and fish oil, the Mohn GmbH has planned and implemented a pass-through washing system for large containers (paloxes).

BIOCEVAL is part of the SARIA Group with 11,000 employees in 26 countries. Through exclusive utilisation of fish by-products BIOCEVAL makes a significant contribution for saving fish resources.

Project description and special features

  • Technically up-to-date, thereby just as economically as ecologically efficient, was the requirement of the company Bioceval when it was about the development and installation of a special pass-through washing system with integrated recirculation system for fish residues. In the course of manufacturing products from fish and seafood, useable residues often remain in transport containers, which in most cases can be utilised for further processing.
  • So it was necessary to not only design and install a cut-to-size pass-through washing systems with high technical and hygienic requirements, but additionally a system with integrated drainage and pre-flushing in a storage bunker, before the actual container cleaning, was integrated in the planning and conception.
  • Moreover, despite a higher capacity, the operating noise should be decreased compared to the old washing system in order to ensure a better working atmosphere. Thanks to long-term know-how in the planning and conception of washing systems for the foodstuff industry, Bioceval was in good hands with the specialists from the “Märkisch Sauerland” region.
  • In order to ensure quick processing, the individual production steps must mesh here. This requires a swift and thorough drainage of the large boxes used for transport.
  • Usually, the plastic large boxes in the formats 1.22 x 1.04 x 0.74 m and 1.43 x 1.16 x 0.87 m are delivered stacked on the ramp and subsequently carried forward by a transport belt to final stacking and single weighing. In the further course, they are turned around and emptied. After the large box has been turned around by 180°, the fish residues are internally further transported for further processing via the conveyor screw system lying below the intake line.
  • By means of a time-controlled fresh water injection via a cold water line provided by the customer, the still adhering fish residues are flushed out of the large boxes after having been turned around so that they are also supplied to the value-added chain for the production of high-quality oils.
  • For the subsequent cleaning process of the large boxes, a multistage washing system is deployed which initially starts with the cleaning of the container inner side under high water pressure. This is followed by the step-by-step cleaning of the remaining surfaces.
  • Pre-cleaning takes place with a pump performance of 11 kW (500 l/min at 7 bar) with 40°C tempered water which, for the start of a shift, is refilled into the 1,300- litre holding pre-washing tank. The dirt discharge takes place via a drum filter integrated laterally on the tank.
  • After the large boxes have passed the 1-m long drip tray, this is followed by a circulating flushing with a pump performance of 15 kW (1,500 l/min at 4 bar). The capacity of the tank of the 2-m long final rinse zone is around 1,200 litres and has an extra large outside box filter. Here the rinsing temperature is 50-55°C and is also heated by means of direct steam injection (80 kW).
  • Subsequently, the clear rinsing process takes place in the 1-m long rinsing zone with directly fed fresh water provided by the customer. An additional disinfection with hydrogen peroxide rounds off the cleaning process of the large boxes. An additional dosage can be selected here on the display.
  • At the end of the cleaning process, the cleaned large boxes are removed from the 4-m long, driven outlet buffer zone using forklifts. The capacity of the 27-m long, 3-m wide and 3.6-m high pass-through washing system is up to 40 large containers per hour.
