Intelligent Control – the smart solution

With Logo!8 to the "smart machine" with MOHN.

The digital future is also gaining ground in the foodstuff industry.

From a desktop workstation or "smartly" via tablet or smartphone, comfortably visualising and diagnosing the health status of machines, e.g. hygiene stations via the "Intelligent Control" process visualisation system.

What everyone is currently talking about as the "smart home" and the "Internet of Things" has long been a reality at Mohn: Since spring 2021, the personal hygiene station type HIGHLINE has been optionally available with the "Intelligent Control" function. This makes Mohn the first supplier of "networked" hygiene stations on the market.

Customer wishes made true

“In the past, we inserted circuit boards into the control system," says Carsten Wolf, Technical Operations Manager at Mohn. But they were rather vulnerable. If a circuit board fails, this leads to disruptions in the course of operations. “Furthermore, every customer has own requirements and wants to integrate the station in an other way into the operational environment.” That is why we started looking for a more durable and flexible solution - and found what we were looking for with LOGO! 8 from SIEMENS. "With this, we realise everything the customer wants with our hygiene station type HIGHLINE."

And that is quite a lot. Time recording control, access authorisations, but also most different flushing times or individually controlled detergent and disinfectant dosage: "With the SIEMENS LOGO! 8 control system, you no longer have rigid specifications, but can make settings down to the second even in the standard version of a hygiene station, simply from the outside via the display", says Wolf.

Why “Intelligent control”

In the age of Industry 4.0, the advantages of networking of the Siemens Logo8! in connection with the integrable WLAN adapter and the “Intelligent Control” process visualisation system to become a smart hygiene station or machine are clearly obvious.

The comfortable and at the same time structured overview via the process visualisation system enables a high degree of safety in order to minimise downtimes and simultaneously faster response times in the event of disruptions. With "Intelligent Control”, not only the visualisation of the system status of machines is possible, e.g. if malfunctions are present. Diagnosis up to settings of operational parameters or flushing intervals, for example, can as well carried out via this smart process visualisation solution.

Here the special highlight is also that with the intelligent networking of "Intelligent Control", several hygiene stations and/or hygiene components, such as multiple hand washing basins, disinfection units with turnstiles etc. within a company can be visualised and controlled centrally in the application. However, the precondition for this is that each unit has at least a Siemens Logo!8 control in connection with an integrable WLAN adapter.

Then there are almost no limits to a smartly networked machine environment, says Carsten Wolf.

Conversion of existing machines

"Conversion of existing hygiene stations or hygiene components to the Intelligent Control functionality is possible, but must be clarified in advance with Mohn's technical service," says Carsten Wolf. Existing, older units and machines should have a Siemens Logo control unit, however. Then a conversion without complications is no problem.

The in-house Mohn service technician then tackles all further work, such as installation of a logic module with integrated Ethernet port for the control system, nano router as well as its configuration. Mohn also supplies the pre-configured "Intelligent Control" app so that the customer can start using his company tablet or smartphone straight away. "But it is also possible to deliver the tablet with the pre-configured application at the same time," says Wolf.

Of course, it is also possible to integrate the status display in the customer's own process visualisation systems such as WinCC or similar.

Advantages of a "smart machine"

  • Minimisation of downtimes
  • Faster response times
  • Flexibility
  • Optimisation of operational procedures
  • Time and cost savings
  • Central monitoring of several units
  • Easy handling

“Our experiences are positive throughout”

“We are glad to have made this step together with Siemens,” summarises the Technical Operations Manager Wolf. “Our experiences are positive throughout” In the meantime, LOGO! 8 has become the control standard at Mohn. After the HIGHLINE line, the high-end product in the area of personnel hygiene stations for use in large-scale businesses, other products followed step by step, such as sluices with legionella flushing, the hand hygiene centre of the Clean-Center type or magnetic clamp-controlled handrail gates.
