Industrial washing system in the convenience industry

Condeli, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hochreiter Lebensmittelbetriebe GmbH based in Reichenthal, Austria, is an innovative family business with around 180 employees. The company produces lasagne and convenience specialities.

In 2020, Condeli invested in technical progress by purchasing an industrial washing system for cleaning large containers, pallets and standard trolleys. This investment is aimed at consistently guaranteeing product quality and complying with international hygiene standards.

Customer requirements and tasks

Specific requirements and tasks of the customer Condeli (Hochreiter) were taken into account during the planning and realisation of the industrial washing system:

  • Space requirements and room design: Due to limited space, the industrial washing system was not installed in a line but "around the corner". It was designed as an L-shaped modular system with a separate infeed/outfeed area in conjunction with a main wash zone and a rinse zone with adjoining outfeed zone. The two washing system modules are connected by a driven 90° conveyor belt.
  • Wash items to be cleaned and throughput:
The industrial washing system cleans the following items:
  • Large containers with the dimensions 1200x1000x790mm,
which are transported sideways through the system.
  • Plastic pallets with the dimensions 1200x800x150mm.
  • 200 litre and 300 litre lifting and loading trolleys (standard trolleys).
The hourly output is approx. 40-60 pieces depending on the items to be washed and the degree of soiling.
  • Loading and ergonomics: The infeed and loading area of the industrial washing system was designed with a push-on ramp in conjunction with a conveyor belt to enable employees to load the heavy items to be washed without straining their backs.
  • Avoidance of water carry-over: Due to the design of the large containers, water carry-over should be avoided. As is well known, the structure of the large plastic containers is characterised by double-walled corner and centre walls.
  • Residual water treatment: A collection tray with a feed pump was also provided underneath the swivelling device to return the collected residual water to the wash tank for reuse.

Project description and special features

The industrial washing system was developed with specific requirements and space conditions in mind. Here are the technical details and special features of the system:

  • Push-on ramp with driven infeed zone: The 4000 mm long push-on ramp has a low-wear cast stainless steel chain with guide cams specially adapted to the items to be washed. These can be retracted on one side to prevent damage to the wash ware, especially the large containers.
  • Steam-heated main wash zone: The main wash zone is 4000 mm long and is heated with steam (temperature range 48°-50°C). A 1000 litre external filter tank with removable filters enables cleaning during operation. The zone offers space for wash items with a maximum throughput width of 1000 mm and height of 1050 mm. A powerful stainless steel centrifugal pump (15 kW) with a washing pressure of 4 bar and a circulation rate of 1500 l/min ensures efficient cleaning.
  • Radial fans for vapour extraction: The system has 4 stainless steel radial fans in both the main wash zone and the rinse zone. These are used to extract the fumes and vapours produced during the cleaning process in order to keep moisture away from the walls and ceilings of the room and prevent the formation of mould.
  • Conductance sensor for detergent concentration: A conductance sensor in the wash tank ensures a constant detergent concentration of 0.3-0.5%, which guarantees efficient consumption.
  • Steam-heated rinsing zone: The rinsing zone is 6000 mm long and also steam-heated (temperature range 50°-65°C). A 1200 litre external filter tank and a separate stainless steel centrifugal pump (15 kW) with a washing pressure of 4 bar and a circulation rate of 1500 l/min ensure thorough rinsing.
  • Prevention of water carry-over: Special measures have been taken to prevent water carry-over in the large tanks with their double-walled structures and reinforcing ribs. An integrated swivelling device after the rinsing zone removes residual water as far as possible. The collected residual water is returned to the wash tank by a feed pump and reused, which contributes to the efficient utilisation of resources.
  • Outlet with stainless steel roller conveyor: The 6000 mm long outlet consists of a robust stainless steel roller conveyor without a separate drive. Using the principle of gravity, the cleaned wash ware is supplied by means of the corresponding inclination. A safety limit switch stops the conveyor belt when the buffer is full.
  • Remote maintenance unit: The system is equipped with a remote maintenance unit that enables the technical service team to identify and, if necessary, rectify faults remotely. This saves time and costs during maintenance.

These technical details and customisations ensure that the industrial washing system at Condeli works efficiently and meets the specific requirements of the food industry.

Summary

The industrial washing system was developed with the aim of integrating seamlessly into Condeli's operations and ensuring maximum efficiency and energy savings.

The system has been specifically designed to keep water consumption in the range of 800-1000 litres per hour, depending on the concentration of detergent and soiling of the wash item.

Special features, such as the energy-saving tunnel construction with double-walled tunnel design and a tightly welded, one-piece machine housing, help to minimise energy consumption.

Another important aspect is the innovative water cascade system, which channels excess hot water from the rinsing zone into the upstream wash tank and refreshes it. This measure optimises the use of resources and enables efficient cleaning of the wash items in accordance with the latest technical standards.

The industrial washing system for Condeli therefore represents a modern solution that not only fulfils the highest cleaning standards, but is also geared towards sustainability and energy efficiency.
