Sole disinfection
Sole disinfection – Solutions for the industry
Sole disinfection of work shoes and work boots is a necessary and important part of a comprehensive hygiene concept in hygienically sensitive production operations such as in the foodstuff industry. In the process, shoe sole disinfection is a downstream task that is usually required as the last step after the thorough cleaning of work shoes and boots. Sole disinfection is not suitable for removing dirt, but it merely disinfects the sole surface after such pollution and thus prevents germs and bacteria from being carried further from the production area into other operating areas such as delivery zones or social rooms. Systems for sole disinfection can be integrated both in a hygiene station and installed separately as a stationary unit. Furthermore, this article deals specifically with stationary systems that are not integrated into a hygiene station.
Sole disinfection is always useful or necessary and prescribed if, in addition to soiling of work shoes and work boots, contamination with germs, bacteria or other potentially harmful micro-contaminants has to be assumed. This applies in particular to operations in the foodstuff industry such as slaughterhouses. Sole disinfection is usually required both before entering and leaving the production areas. Additional disinfection of shoe soles can also make sense when moving between different production areas. This prevents harmful germs and bacteria from being carried in and out as far as possible.
Disinfection basin (stand feet)
For disinfection basins as floor version, the model type DDB-S is offered in 2 dimensions by default, but it can also be manufactured with other dimensions. The disinfection basin in a robust and hygienic design is equipped with a non-slip grating and stand pipe valve.
Disinfection-basin (installation)
Disinfection basins for installation in the floor are robustly made of stainless steel and can be ordered in 6 different versions. Depending on the specific model, disinfection basins have either no, one or two (upstream and downstream) drip trays. The non-slip gratings are removable.
Disinfection bath, mobile
The mobile disinfection baths type DBB-R are designed for disinfecting soles and wheels and equipped with an up and down ramp. This version has a horizontal design without stand feet and equipped with handles and 2 castors so that the disinfection bath can be transported without any problems.
Disinfection mat
The walkable disinfection mat type DM is available in 6 different sizes. All sizes are provided with a surrounding skirting protection and can be optionally delivered with a logostick or a solid rubber ramp. The non-slip mat with permeable surface is filled with disinfectant for use.
Dosing station
With a dosing station for sole disinfection (to be used with stationary disinfection basins), cleaning the soles is particularly efficient and helps to save disinfectant. The dosing station type DDB-R is wall-mounted and equipped with a can holder for up to 10 kg.

FIELDS OF APPLICATION FOR SOLE DISINFECTION
PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF SOLE DISINFECTION
The disinfection of the soles of work shoes and boots is always only one part of a more comprehensive hygiene concept and should be planned together with the separate cleaning of soles or boot cleaning. In the process, there should be direct proximity between boot and sole cleaning toward sole disinfection. In doing so, disinfection must always take place after cleaning.
Boot or sole cleaning usually also includes a simultaneous disinfection of the soles due to the detergent used - combined with a mechanical cleaning by the brush rollers. Businesses where a walk-through disinfection basin is used - mainly in meat processing plants or industrial kitchens - often have walk-through disinfection basins without a mechanical sole or boot cleaning system in use. This is often the case when the degree of pollution of the soles or boot shafts is low and does not require mechanical cleaning and pure sole disinfection is sufficient.
Hygiene stations with integrated sole cleaning and sole disinfection can provide an example of the correct sequence of individual measures for personal hygiene. In the process, sole disinfection is always an additional measure apart from cleaning the soles in order to minimise not only soiling but also hazardous germs and other contaminations that are invisible to the eye.
Planning and implementation of sole disinfection - taking into account various decisive factors
Depending on the company size and the structural conditions on site, our hygiene specialists plan a sole disinfection system tailored to the respective requirements as part of a personnel hygiene station.
In the process, these factors are, above all, decisive:
- Individual operational requirements
- Number of shifts
- Level of pollution
- Requirements of the food control authority in charge
- Number of staff within a certain period

PRODUCTS FOR SOLE DISINFECTION FROM MOHN
The Mohn GmbH is a specialist for hygiene technology and thus also for systems for sole disinfection to avoid contaminations of production areas, delivery zones and social rooms or changing area. A special focus in the design and use of our products is the foodstuff industry, for which our systems for sole disinfection, as well as from other product categories, are optimised. Of course, our products can also be used in other production areas such as in agriculture, medical and pharmaceutical industries or also in industrial bakeries and other businesses.
Depending on the local conditions, different versions are used:
- Disinfection basins for floor installation are installed at ground level in the floor (see figure on the left). When walking over the grating of the disinfection basin, the soles of the shoes or boots are disinfected. The disinfection basins can be equipped with one upstream of downstream drip tray each so that spreading of the disinfection liquid into other premises is avoided as far as possible. In addition to passenger traffic, disinfection basins can also be designed and supplied for traffic with industrial trucks or even for forklift traffic.
To add disinfectant sparingly to the water in the disinfection basin, it is optionally possible to install a pulse-controlled dosing station.
- Disinfection basins with stand feet are mostly used when it is not always possible to provide a pit for floor installation on site. This is very often the case if walk-through disinfection basins have to be installed in premises which are not located on the ground floor. For multi-storey hygiene areas or production facilities, it makes sense to use the design with stand feet due to the statics or the intermediate ceiling.
In the process, we do everything to assist our customers in 100% implementation of the legal hygiene regulations. Apart from the standard products from our comprehensive product range we offer with many of our products also the possibility for individual, custom-fit version for the respective operation and the local conditions prevailing there.
For the implementation of our systems for sole disinfection in your existing or planned hygiene concept, our trained staff will be happy to advise you. This way, you benefit from our expertise and decades of experience in this field.
